Who was Clara Starrett?

Clara Starrett Mathews was a formidable woman, but then, she had to be.
In 1898, after the deaths of her husband (Sanford) and her son (Frank), she was put
in the unique position of assuming the presidency of Mathews Brothers. In typical Maine
fashion, she did what she had to do; together with her daughter-in-law (Addie) and
her daughter (Maude); she continued to run the company. This made Mathews Brothers
the largest company in Maine to be run entirely by women. When you consider that
women would not be granted the right to vote for another twenty years, this was indeed a
bold task.

Yes, Clara was a formidable woman, and it is for this reason we chose her as the
namesake of our most formidable window.
