Sanford Hills Mathews

Sanford Hills Mathews, was born in Searsmont, Maine on May 6, 1832, one of seven children of Morrill and Rebecca Mathews. He moved to Bangor at the age of 19 to learn the trade of joinery. Sanford rejoined his family in Belfast in 1854 as he continued to learn his trade. Summers he worked, and winters he taught public school. In 1860, he joined his brothers, and the company was renamed “Mathews Brothers Company”.

“Mr. Mathews took an undeniable and possessive pride in his business. He applied himself to it early and late, and never, it is recalled, took for himself a vacation until his only son’s graduation from the University of Rochester in 1885.

“His employees were deeply attached to him, and their interest was reciprocated. Sanford manifested a kind consideration for their welfare, and his genial manner, together with a happy way of smoothing difficulties won their esteem.”

Sanford Hill Mathews passed away on July 16, 1897. “His was a life of simplicity, of simple obedience to duty, of earnest toil, and of ready service to those around him.”
